ISBE Need Not Be Notified if Schools Close Due to Flu Outbreaks
Schools that have closed, or are about to close, because of a wave of the flu have to work with local, state, and federal health agencies, but they don't have to call the State Board of Education.

Two Illinois school districts have closed due to the flu: South Fork in Kincaid, which is in Central Illinois; and Eldorado in Southern Illinois. ISBE spokesman Matt Vanover says school districts have been advised to coordinate closely with their local public health departments, and in turn with the state public health department and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. They are asked to call the state Board of Education, although there's no requirement, and both districts did contact the board about their closures.

Vanover says the priority is health concerns. He says since the Board of Education doesn't have a real-time absence reporting system, there's not much point in districts calling. Absence reports are submitted monthly. Vanover says the U.S. Department of Education and the CDC are using Web-based reporting to track the spread.
