Illinois Corn, Soybean Harvests Expected Lower
SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (AP) -- Corn and soybean production in Illinois is expected to be slightly lower this year over 2008 despite forecasts of improved harvests for both crops nationwide.

In a report released Friday, the National Agricultural Statistics Service forecasts that Illinois corn growers will harvest 2.11 billion bushels this year. That's down from 2.13 billion bushels last year.

The yield is expected to be 179 bushels per acre, unchanged from last year and September's forecast.

Illinois is forecast to produce 411 million bushels of soybeans, down from 428 million last year. The expected yield of 44 bushels per acre is unchanged from September's outlook and down three bushels per acre from last year.

Nationwide, corn production is estimated to be up 8 percent from 2008, while soybean output is forecast to rise 10 percent.
