FIRST ON WGIL: Knox County Health Department Outlines H1N1 Vaccine Plan
FIRST REPORTED 6:00am 10/9/09 A plan has been set into place, now the Knox County Health Department and the community simply must wait for the federal government to ship out vaccines for the H1N1 virus.

Director of Environmental Health Services Wil Hayes told the Knox County Board of Health last night, a plan is now in place to disperse H1N1 vaccines when the department receive the supply it requested.

Hayes says the health department plans on holding five clinics at area schools in just one day to get the vaccine out to those in priority groups.

Hayes tells WGIL there is a specific purpose to having the clinics at area schools.

"The most susceptible population is school-aged kids," Hayes said. "Working with our school districts, we thought it was best to try to go out and hit each of the districts, and the other individuals in those priority groups that live in those districts, all in one day, to go out, get them all done."

Hayes says a second wave of vaccines will have to also be given to those who are under the age of 9 who will need two vaccines to fight off the virus.

Hayes says the health department has already received a smaller shipment of the vaccine, a nasal mist, which is in the process of being given out to health care providers and first responders.

Hayes says funding for the clinics is being given to the health department by federal grants.
