Illinois Leads Country in Stimulus-Funded Projects
Candidates for governor are squabbling over the speed with which the state is getting projects in its capital program under way, but Illinois leads the nation in projects funded under the federal stimulus program.

Illinois is No. 1 with more than 250 projects under way or completed under the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act, commonly known as the stimulus program. Those projects are worth $627 million.

Illinois Transportation Secretary Gary Hannig said when the federal money came through, Illinois had a lot of projects that were sitting on the drawing board un-funded, so they were quickly out the door of IDOT headquarters.

As far as the state capital program is concerned, State Sen. Kirk Dillard (R-Hinsdale), a Republican candidate for governor, says the administration of Gov. Pat Quinn has been too slow in getting projects started, meaning the beneficial effect on the economy has yet to occur.
