Quinn Says He Has Ideas to Increase State Revenue
Gov. Pat Quinn says he has some ideas to raise revenue for the state, and he’ll share them with lawmakers next week.

Quinn says given the way the state budget was put together over the summer, it's no surprise that the state is going broke now. The budget was enacted recognizing $3 billion in expenses with only $1.2 billion to cover those costs. The governor was given the discretion to decide how to allocate the money, but he says coming up short was inevitable.

Among the programs now coming up short are MAP grants for college students, and the health insurance bills for state employees.

The governor says an income tax increase is "always on the table," but acknowledges that passing an income tax increase will be tough, given the 60 percent vote requirement in the Veto Session. He is considering a cigarette tax increase, or other not-yet-divulged ideas for revenue increases that he says he will share with state lawmakers next week.

The first part of the Veto Session runs Wednesday through Friday next week (Oct. 14-16).
