Hospitals Concerned About Pluses and Minuses of Health Care Reform
Hospital executives are concerned that health care reform will help some parts of the system, but hurt other parts. They spoke recently to U.S. Sen. Dick Durbin (D-Ill.) about those concerns.

Harry Wolin, administrator and CEO of the Mason-Dixon Hospital in Havana, says someone must recognize that the system needs more doctors and nurses. He asks who will treat the millions of people who could have health care coverage once Congress votes on reform. Wolin also hopes that the federal government will increase Medicare reimbursement rates, saying facilities aren't receiving enough money to cover costs.

Ed Curtis, president and CEO of the Memorial Health System in Springfield, plus two rural hospitals, says the current state of the economy isn't helping. He says charity care is up this year by 15 percent, to $15 million. Curtis says his system could probably reduce costs by 60 percent if everyone were insured. All are closely watching the health care debate on the national stage.
