Corrections Worker on Leave for Hanging Noose
SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (AP) -- An Illinois Department of Corrections employee has been placed on paid leave after a noose was found hanging in his work area.

Corrections spokeswoman Januari Smith says the incident happened this week at the department's headquarters in Springfield.

She would not identify the employee and would confirm only that he is white and male.

She says the noose was found hanging next to his coat on a rack near his work area. The area is secured, and only authorized personnel can get in.

A co-worker spotted the noose and reported it to supervisors.

Smith says the employee admitted that it was his and was placed on leave pending an investigation. She would not say how long that investigation might take.
