Commission Hosts Forum on Underage Drinking
Underage drinking is enough of a problem that a recent meeting on the subject attracted 120 people from around the state for a brainstorming session. The Illinois Liquor Control Commission hosted a statewide forum to focus on what's working, what's not, and how to expand on the "working" side. Commission Executive Director Lainie Krozel says the best way to do that is to ask communities what the state can do, or stop doing, to help.

One of the ideas is consistent bar entry age limits. Some communities allow only people age 21 and over to enter a bar, but others allow younger people in. Some officials say that's a problem.

Another idea was to select one pre-packaged, Internet-based program for new college students that explains the dangers of drinking. Commissioner Steve Schnorf says many colleges and universities are already using such programs, so maybe it's time to choose one and make sure all institutions have it.

A survey for communities has now been given out, and officials hope it leads to less underage drinking.
