Doctors: Heed Warnings About H1N1 and Kids
CHICAGO (AP) -- H1N1 deaths in children are not common. But they are happening, and public health officials say parents should know warning signs when flu turns dangerous.

These include trouble breathing, lack of thirst, fever with a rash and bluish-tinged skin color. These are among symptoms that require medical help.

Last week alone, there were 19 new reports of U.S. children who died, out of at least 76 H1N1 fatalities in kids since April. That compares with 68 pediatric deaths from seasonal flu since September 2008.

Illinois' four deaths in kids from infants to age 18 include a suburban Chicago teen girl last week.

Dr. Susan Gerber of Cook County's public health department, says cases in kids are concerning and need to be watched closely.

The University of Chicago's Dr. Kenneth Alexander says he tells parents to trust their instincts. That means seek medical help if their child's flu seems worse than usual.
