Farmers Still Affected by Unusual Weather
Farmers in the area are still hoping for some dry and warm conditions in order to harvest what's still in their fields.

University of Illinois Extension Advisor Kyle Cecil says the recent wet and cold temperatures do not allow much heat to accumulate which leaves crops like corn, still in the fields waiting to be harvested. He says farmers are getting nervous and they want to get out in their fields and see what the crop looks like.

Cecil tells WGIL, this fall's weather creates unusual situations for farmers.

"We would generally see about three-quarters to one point of moisture per day coming out of that corn plant the first two weeks of October," Cecil said. "When you look at the first two weeks of October that we've had, there was very little to nothing happening. So our biggest window for moisture reduction in the crop has kind of passed at this point."

Cecil says farmers could still be in store for an Indian summer of warmer temperatures with dry conditions although the National Weather Service is predicting rain for much of the rest of the week.

He says some farmers are currently opening up their fields mostly for psychological reasons but also to get more air flowing through the fields which could dry them out a bit more.

Cecil says producers are all in the same boat together and says they will all get through it.
