Hero of NIU Shootings Turns Villian for Some
CHICAGO (AP) -- A tough-talking police chief hailed as a hero for leading his men into a Northern Illinois University classroom after a gunman opened fire inside could now be in danger of losing his $199,000 a year job.

The same no-nonsense persona that won Donald Grady laurels from survivors of the Valentine's Day shooting last year that left five students dead appears to have become a liability.

Critics have long accused NIU's 6-foot-5 top cop of being too combative.

But matters came to a head recently after an editor of the campus newspaper accused Grady of threatening and shouting at him during a three-hour tirade.

In response, administrators put the 56-year-old on paid leave while a panel reviews the allegations.

NIU says Grady's dismissal is one of the possible outcomes. Grady has declined to comment on the matter.
