IL Unemployment Moves Back Upward
The unemployment rate in Illinois is back up another half-percent.

After a small drop in August to 10 percent, unemployment jumped back up to 10.5 percent in September, according to figures released Friday by the Illinois Department of Employment Security.

University of Illinois economist Fred Giertz says this is what happens in a recession. He says the last two recessions were not as severe in terms of job losses as this recession has been, but this one is more typical of recessions.

This rate of 10.5 percent is the highest since 1983. Jobs lost in September totaled 14,200, the 20th consecutive month of job losses. The total number of jobs in Illinois -- 5,634,700 -- is at its lowest point since 1995.

The Illinois unemployment rate in September 2008 was 6.7 percent.

Nationally, unemployment rose in September to 9.8 percent, from 9.7 percent in August.
