Moffitt Says Quinn Will Find MAP Grant Money, Now that He Has the Authority
A local lawmaker says if Governor Pat Quinn is given the task of trying to find money to continue to fund grants many college students need in order to keep attending, there's a good chance he'll do it.

74th District State Representative Don Moffitt says he was glad that the Lesiglature voted to restore Monetary Assistant Program, or, MAP Grants, during last week's first part of the fall veto session, meaning students relying on the money for the Spring semester will now get it.

Moffitt tells WGIL the Governor apparently wanted the ability to use part of the one-billion dollars in discretionary spending passed in the most recent budget to restore MAP grants, and that's just what he'll get.

"We were not able to find out how much of it is left, but it was the Governor's office that requested this authorization," Moffitt said. "The legislature responded to that, gave the Governor that authority, and hopefully he has some (money) still available. But that was in response to his request."

Moffitt says, however, the legislation the Governor signed into law Sunday is not a permanent solution to funding MAP Grants for the future.

He does call it, however, a good first step.
