Poll: Residents Want Ethics Reform, Don't Think Lawmakers Will Do It
A new poll doesn't rank the candidates; rather, it tests whether voters really want ethics reform in Illinois. According to the poll from the Paul Simon Public Policy Institute, that answer is "yes." The results show that between 64 percent and nearly 78 percent want various ethics reforms, such term limits for legislative leaders, further limits on campaign contributions, and less political influence on redistricting. The only reform proposal that lagged was one to create a public financing system for elections in Illinois, which won only a 49 percent favorable rating.

Institute director David Yepsen says he was surprised by the results. Visiting professor Charles Leonard says if he wasn't surprised, he was gratified at how many names and problems with which Illinois voters were familiar.

State lawmakers didn’t get much of an approval rating. The only question directly related to them was one that asked how to best enact reform. Less than 13 percent said legislative action should reform Illinois politics. Nearly 69 percent said it was up to the voters in referendum.
