Abingdon Police Officers Recognized for Saving Woman in House Fire
The Abingdon City Council took time out to pay tribute to two city officers who are credited with rescuing a woman from a burning home.

The officers, Ken Jones and Josh Kramer, received commendations from Abingdon Police Chief Fred Andrews at Monday night's city council meeting and applause from everyone else.

The fire at night on September 30th broke out in a two-story residence at 521 South Main Street. Andrews says the officers arrived first on the scene, and after assessing the situation, determined someone was still inside the burning house.

"The public safety and serving the public fresh in their minds, (the officers) tried to enter the structure to bring a human being to safety," Andrews said. "Unable to enter the building because of fire and smoke, they were able to find a ladder and bring Gayle Andrews to safety, essentially saving her life."

Gayle Andrews was taken by paramedics to a local hospital for treatment of smoke inhalation after she was retrieved from the house. No other injuries were reported.

The police chief says the fire marked the second time Jones has responded heroically. Andrews says Jones saved the life of a baby who was unresponsive about a year ago.
