Stimulus Dollars Will Help Child Care Programs
Low-income parents struggling to pay for child care are getting some help.

The state is getting a one-time injection of $74 million for the Child Care Assistance Program.

The money will be used to reduce the amount that parents pay for subsidized child care by 15 percent, and to extend from 30 days to 90 days the time that an unemployed parent can look for a job and keep the kid enrolled in child care.

The money also will keep enrollment open for families needing child care help to avoid the need for a waiting list.

The federal stimulus money runs only through September 2011. Gov. Pat Quinn acknowledged he will have to find money to replace it when it expires.

The funding affects 90,000 families, and 174,000 children.
