GOP Candidates for Governor Debate in Chicago
Republican candidates for governor squared off Wednesday in a debate, the first of this election cycle.

Among the topics: fixing the state's financial troubles. All five candidates who participated in the debate agreed that an income tax increase is no way to fix the state budget.

There was also talk on how to get things done in Springfield with a Republican governor, assuming Democrats will continue to control the House and Senate after the 2010 election. Businessman Adam Andrzejewski says Republicans must take the fight to House Speaker Michael Madigan. "We've gotta run on policy," Andrzejewski said. "We need to challenge Michael Madigan. We need to take the fight to the Democrats based on policy."

Bob Schillerstrom, chairman of the DuPage County Board, believes the governor's veto power may be the answer. He also is confident that the 2010 election will bring more Republicans to office in the House and Senate.

Others who participated in the debate included public relations consultant Dan Proft, State Sen. Bill Brady (R-Bloomington) and State Sen. Kirk Dillard (R-Hinsdale).
