| County Board Finance Committee Recommends GREDA Funding |
FIRST REPORTED 6:00am 10/22/09 The Galesburg Regional Economic Development Association is one step closer to getting funding for another year from Knox County.
The Knox County Board Finance Committee Wednesday night voted to recommend to the full board another one-year contract worth $30,000 for membership in GREDA.
Some, however, questioned why GREDA needs any county money when the county has hired a Public Information Officer, Gary Tomlin, who also does some economic development work.
Knox County Board Chair Greg Bacon says Tomlin can't do it all.
"If I put $30,000 into a budget for Gary to do that, I don't think we could do it," Bacon said. "I don't think we could reproduce the fliers, the paperwork, the chasing down of the leads, the follow-up, the going to meet people, and stuff like that."
Even Tomlin, who attends GREDA executive board meetings, agreed.
"If it's a me or them choice, take them," Tomlin said. "You get so much for your money. That's a remarkable organization. That's a collection of the best minds in this community."
The finance committee, however, recommended that the $30,000 be paid from a contingency fund set up and bankrolled by gate receipts from the Knox County Landfill, versus using the actual landfill fund, as has been done in the past.
GREDA officials were not in attendance at Wednesday night's meeting. The county board will vote on it next week.
