Unemployment Climbs in All Illinois Metro Areas
CHICAGO (AP) -- Unemployment rates in every metropolitan area in Illinois rose in September, continuing a trend that's dragged on for nearly 2 1/2 years.

The Illinois Department of Employment Security yesterday released figures that show the unemployment rate climbed in all 12 regions. That comes as the statewide not-seasonally adjusted jobless rate climbed in September to 10.2 percent. The U.S. rate was 9.5 percent.

Rockford had the greatest increase, rising from 8.9 percent in September of last year to 15.2 percent this year.

The Chicago-Naperville-Joliet metro area reported the largest percentage decrease in jobs, 4.9 percent, with a loss of 188,200 positions.

Locally, unemployment climbed from 10 percent to 10.3 last month in Knox County and from 10.3 to 10.7 percent in the City of Galesburg. The rate also went up 4-tenths in Warren County to 8 percent.

State officials say September marked the 28th straight month in which the unemployment rate was higher than it was the same month of the previous year.
