Lawmakers Still Concerned Over Where Extra MAP Grant Money Will Come From
Days after Gov. Pat Quinn signed a measure providing full funding to the Monetary Award Program for needy college students, lawmakers still aren't sure exactly where the $205 million will come from.

State Rep. Lou Lang (D-Skokie) says lawmakers will have to determine what existing funds they can dip into to fund the second semester grants

He says to the public it may seem like a smoke and mirrors trick, but promises it's not.

"This sounds like smoke and mirrors to the general public, I understand that, but we can not afford to have thousands of our college kids from Illinois have to drop out of college."

Lang assures students who are eligible for a MAP Grant will get their money.

Quinn has proposed an increase in the cigarette tax, closing corporate tax loopholes and raising the personal income tax to bring additional dollars into state coffers.
