State Offers Grants for "Schoolyard Habitats"
SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (AP) -- Children in Illinois may develop natural habitats on schoolgrounds with grants available from the Illinois Department of Natural Resources and the Illinois Conservation Foundation.

Schools may apply for up to $600 from the Schoolyard Habitat Action Grant or $500 from the Rain Garden Initiative.

Past recipients have created butterfly gardens, prairie plots, wetlands, outdoor classrooms, bird nesting boxes and other projects.

The Jadel Youth Foundation and the Daniel F. and Ada L. Rice Foundation are sponsors of the 14-year-old Schoolyard Habitat program.

Gov. Pat Quinn, started the Rain Garden program when he was lieutenant governor in 2005 with support from the U.S. Fish and Wildlfie Service.
