FIRST ON WGIL: Jan Occhi Resigns from Knox County Board
POSTED 6:20pm 10/23/09 A Galesburg resident who's been a part of Knox County government for over a decade is resigning.

A statement from the County Board issued after business hours Friday evening indicates board member Jan Occhi has submitted her resignation effective December first. The statement says Occhi will be moving to Mercer County.

Occhi has been on the Knox County Board for 12 years, and served a term as Chair. Her term as a member on the board from District Three, representing most of the southern half of Galesburg, expires next year.

Occhi currently represents the Knox County Board on the Galesburg Regional Economic Development Association Board, the Carver Community Action Agency, the Knox County Child Advocacy Center, the Knox County Boys' and Girls' Club, the Knox County Juvenile Justice Council, and the Galesburg-Area Chamber of Commerce, and that will mean County Board Chair Greg Bacon will have to pick someone else to fulfill those roles.

Occhi also serves on the Knox County Civic Center Authority Board, but will be able to retain that post.

In a prepared statement, Bacon says Occhi will be missed, and Occhi says she is proud of the many county-wide projects she has been a part of, including the building of the new Knox County Jail.

Occhi also praises the positive financial condition she says the county is in.

The Knox County Democratic Central Committee will have to caucus to pick someone they recommend to fill the remaining year of Occhi's term.

Attempts Friday evening to contact Occhi for an on-air interview were unsuccessful.
