Durbin Still Supports Public Option
A health care reform bill with a public option is something U.S. Sen. Dick Durbin (D-Ill.) says he is backing.

A bill being drafted by U.S. Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) would include a public option but it would not be funded by taxpayer dollars. Instead it would be funded by people paying premiums.

Durbin says it's a bill he backs and it should not be confused with another bill that has been dubbed "Medicare Part E." Under that proposal, taxpayer dollars would be used to provide a program like Medicare that would cover anyone who applies.

Liberals in the House have called the public option essential to overhauling the nation's health care system, and President Obama has often said that he favors it.

The provision being considered by Reid would let individual states drop out of the system, a design that could make it more appealing to moderates.
