Effort to Make Casimir Pulaski an Honorary U.S. Citizen
There's a state holiday in his honor in Illinois, and now -- 230 years after he died in battle -- Revolutionary War hero Casimir Pulaski could become an honorary U. S. citizen. The U.S. House and Senate have sent President Obama a resolution making it so.

Frank Spula, president of both the Polish National Alliance and the Polish American Congress, says it would be an important honor for Pulaski and for all Polish- Americans. He says the Poles emigrated here almost 400 years ago.

Spula, who works in Chicago, says people of Polish descent are in all parts of Illinois, though mostly in the Chicago area.

Pulaski, in whose honor many Illinoisans are off school or work the first Monday in March, was named a general two years before his death in 1779.
