Gas Prices in Illinois Increase
The price of gasoline has shot up in recent weeks.

The statewide average in Illinois is $2.80, up from $2.51 a month ago, according to the Fuel Gauge Report from the AAA Chicago Motor Club.

AAA spokeswoman Beth Mosher says the weakness of the dollar, and brightening economic prospects, are the cause. They have combined to push up the price of crude oil, the main ingredient in gasoline, to $79 a barrel, a six-week high. The price has just fallen below $79.

Mosher says the price is still low enough that many drivers have given up on the conservation efforts they undertook last year when gas was over $4 a gallon.

The current price in Illinois is 2 cents less than it was last year at this time.
