City Officials Want Private Rail Car Owners to Come to Galesburg
Officials from two local organizations will be attending a conference in about a week that they hope will result in some new support for an ongoing effort.

The Galesburg-Area Convention and Visitors Bureau and the National Railroad Hall of Fame will be attending the upcoming convention of the American Association of Private Railroad Car Owners November sixth and seventh in Savannah, Georgia.

National Railroad Hall of Fame Executive Director Julie King tells WGIL's "Galesburg Live" she attended last year's convention, and says the reason for attending this year will be a bit different.

"Last year when I went to their meeting, we were presenting the concept -- it was just the Hall of Fame -- and trying to just introduce the project to this group," King said. "This year, now, we're in a position to begin marketing Galesburg as a tourist destination."

King says private rail car owners have a unique and important interest in rail history, so it's important to try and get them to travel in their rail cars to Galesburg, stay here for awhile, and possibly help the National Railroad Hall of Fame through financial contributions.

She says she's working with the city on a way that rail siding can be built near the Galesburg Amtrak depot downtown.
