County Board Approves GREDA Funding
Without as much controversy as in the past, the Knox County Board, Wednesday night, threw another year's support behind a local economic development entity.

The Knox County Board Wednesday night, voted 11 to 3 with one abstention to fund the Galesburg Regional Economic Development Association $30,000 over the next year.

GREDA chairman Tom Schimidt says the continual funding of GREDA is really an investment in the community's future.

District Two Democrat Paul Stewart questioned Schmidt and GREDA for taking trips to China in the past and asked if those type of travels would continue. Schmidt told the board they would since GREDA will go wherever business takes them.

"It's simply a stark reality that the Chinese economy is, in fact, producing a lot of component parts and manufacturing products, which enables us to import them," Schmidt said. "If we were to consciously choose to not do business in the Chinese arena, we would significantly hamper our ability to eventually improve the scope of our own nation's economy."

District Two Republican Dr. Bill Abel says last time he voted to not fund the group but this time he says he would vote in favor of the economic development group since they have changed leadership and has more of a presence with the county board. He said he will need results in Galesburg to support the group next year.

Only Stewart, District Three's Barbara Foster and District Four's Lowell Manhardt did not vote in favor of supporting GREDA.
