A Daylight Savings Reminder to Save Lives
An official with the Galesburg Fire Department is urging area residents to utilize a inexpensive but effective tool which could save your life in the future.

Sunday marks the end of Daylight Savings time where people turn back their clocks one hour, and the fire department says taking a minute to change your smoke detector's batteries could pay dividends for you and your family in the long run.

Galesburg Fire Department Captain Dan Foley says fire officials recently participated in a program that provided free pizzas to people who were found to have working detectors in their home. He says many people were able to find at least one working detector which entitled them to a free pizza but Foley tells WGIL, many situations didn't live up to department standards.

"It's not a new disappointment I guess. We are disappointed, but the national figures and our experience in the past show that's fairly normal."

Foley tells WGIL the objective of the project was simple.

"Our goal was to just get people aware of what they should be doing and to leave houses in better off than when we got to them."

Foley says parents could use this weekend to show their children the importance of having a working smoke detector. He says it could be used to inform youth on how to respond in case of a fire.

Foley says there is no excuse not to have a properly working detector, not just for your personal safety, but for your family.
