Illinois Farmers Growing More Pumpkins
SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (AP) -- Illinois is one of the nation's top pumpkin producers and this year the state is devoting even more acres to its pumpkin crop.

According to the 2007 Census of Agriculture, Illinois harvested about 13,600 acres of pumpkins from 502 farms. That's up from nearly 12,300 acres from 475 farms in 2002. The Illinois Department of Agriculture says the pumpkin crop netted more than $22 million last year.

The department says most of the pumpkins farmed in Illinois are processed in Illinois too. Illinois Agriculture director Tom Jennings says the state's "specialty crop producers are working hard to meet the increasing demand for Illinois-grown produce."
