Edgar Supports U of I Interim President Appointment
Putting former University of Illinois President Stanley Ikenberry in as the interim president is a "no brainer," a prominent member of the faculty says.

Former Gov. Jim Edgar, now a distinguished fellow at the University of Illinois Institute of Government and Public Affairs, says putting Ikenberry in as an interim president is a good move.

The U. of I. Board of Trustees, meeting Saturday in Urbana, appointed Ikenberry, 74, as interim president. Ikenberry served as president from 1979-95. He takes over Jan. 1, when the resignation of President B. Joseph White takes effect. White resigned as a result of a scandal over the influence of clout in admissions.

Edgar says Ikenberry teaches classes, is on campus every day, doesn't have learn on the job and he can step right in. Edgar praises Gov. Pat Quinn for recognizing that he should support the U. of I. Board of Trustees and not treat the university as a department under the governor.
