Galesburg Life Chain: Adoption the Loving Option
Members of several local churches took to sidewalks along busy Galesburg streets and around the Public Square holding signs with pro-life messages as part of a nationwide effort.

The messages on the signs Sunday included: "Abortion Kills Children" and "Life: The First Inalienable Right." The peaceful demonstration was a Life Chain, the 19th that's been held in Galesburg. The national Life Chain website (www.nationalifechain.org) says more than 1,400 cites and towns held Life Chains in over 1,600 locations last year.

Pat Conklin, a member of Corpus Christi Catholic Church in Galesburg, tells WGIL people representing about 20 churches stood holding signs around the Public Square, while others were at Losey, Broad, Fremont and North Henderson streets.

"We're just trying to alert the community, our neighbors, our friends, our fellow workers, our media, our elected officials that life is sacred and should be protected from the moment of conception."

The Life Chain concluded with a rally on the public square. Conklin says this year's theme was "Adoption: The Loving Option." A Galesburg woman who was adopted and a couple that adopted two children were among the speakers at the rally.

Other Life Chains in the region were held in Peoria, the Quad Cities and Macomb.
