Monmouth-Roseville Approves Budget
A budget for the current school year is officially in place in the Monmouth-Roseville School District, but not before a lengthy discussion about just how flush with cash the budget would be, and what could be done with some of that.

The District 238 Board last night approved a nearly $15 million spending plan for the current academic year, a budget that overall has a slight deficit, thanks to the fact that the district will accept nearly $700,000 in federal money from a jobs bill designed to keep teachers and other public sector workers employed.

Distirct superintendent Paul Woehlke says that extra money will be good to have since the district desperately needs to upgrade its technology.

"Our infrastructure is not up to the task of supporting the new software and hardware we have in place. We need to replace routers and switches, we need to get new software for library and food service, we need better connectivity among buildings."

Woehlke says the work would likely have been done anyway without the extra federal money, and at first he thought he'd recommend not accepting it.

But he says it'll essentially save the district from making further budget cuts or decisions for another year.
