Teachers Union Supports Sales Tax Increase
The teachers of the Galesburg School District want you to vote for an increase in the Knox County Sales Tax in just a few weeks.

The Galesburg Education Association issued a statement Friday to that end, in support of the proposed one-percent increase in the county sales tax that, under state law, can only be used to pay for construction and other related projects.

The GEA statement indicates that while no one wants to incur a sales or property tax increase right now given the economy, many of the projects listed as part of the district's 20-year Master Facilities Plan, especially those indicated as life-safety work, will need to be done for the safety of students and teachers.

The union also says that the district has assured them that all General State Aid funds will continue to be used for educational purposes only, and that academic projects will still be the top priority.

They say teachers and paraprofessionals "overwhelmingly" indicated support of the sales tax increase.

GEA president Russ Ullrich was unavailable for comment Friday afternoon.
