New Rules for Deer Accidents in Illinois
If you somehow choose to keep the deer you may accidentally kill with your vehicle, the state has issued new rules for what to do with it.

The Illinois Department of Natural Resources now requires individuals who wish to claim a deer killed in a vehicle collision, to report the possession by internet or by phone.

IDNR spokesperson Januari Smith says there are two reasons for the rule change.

"Using technology a little bit more and also so that we can try to keep track of the deer population a little bit better."

Smith says the reporting methods are hopefully easy.

"You would have to contact IDNR either via our website which is available 24 hours a day from the comfort of your own home or you can call us."

Smith says the deer must be reported within 24 hours with the roadkill deer reporting form online, or you must call the DNR before 4:30 p-m the next business day following the accident.
