Shake-Up in Management at GREDA
The now former president of Carl Sandburg College didn't stay retired for very long.

The Galesburg Regional Economic Development Association says Tom Schmidt is taking over as President of the organization as of Friday.

Schmidt has been serving as Chairman of GREDA's Board of Directors, under a term that was to expire in January.

Schmidt tells WGIL the time was right for him to take on a new role.

"As a private citizen, I find myself thinking about these kinds of matters anyway and I thought that it's just going to give me a good opportunity to pave the sidewalk of interest that I have by lending myself to providing stewardship to this organization at this point in time."

Schmidt will work on relations with the organization's investors, strategic planning, supervising GREDA's staff, and other things, in a role he says isn't necessarily full time, but he will work on as much as he can.

Current NAEIR CEO and former Galesburg Mayor Gary Smith will take on the chairmanship on an interim basis, and tells WGIL he's just working on something he's believed in since he was Mayor.

"I truly believe in the concept of the public-private relationship in economic development and anything I can do to foster that development, whether that be on the board behinds the scenes or kind of out in front as chair, I'll do."

Greg Mangieri, who has been GREDA president, will still be with the organization, but will become Vice President for Economic Development.
