Green Party Wants In
(IRN) -- The Green Party is protesting upcoming governor and Senate candidate debates.

Green Party governor candidate Rich Whitney says he should be allowed to participate in upcoming debates, but says can't because, according to Whitney, the groups sponsoring the debates are using polling numbers to determine who can participate.

Whitney says groups like the League of Women Voters say he must show at least 10 percent in polls such as Rasmussen. But Whitney says sometimes those polls don't give voters the option of voting for him. Instead, Whitney says, voters are asked about Democratic Gov. Pat Quinn and the Republican, State Sen. Bill Brady (R-Bloomington).

Whitney says the only upcoming debate in which he will be participating is Thursday in Carbondale. He says there was only a 5 percent polling requirement. He argues that debate organizers should base their cutoff decision on the number of voters who cast their ballot for him in his 2006 run for governor.

Meanwhile, Phil Huckelberry, Illinois Green Party chairman, says Both Whitney and Green Party Senate candidate LeAllen Jones should be allowed to participate in all debates regardless of polling numbers.

Whitney says he will protest outside of venues where the debates will take place, but hopes there will be enough social outcry to clear the way for his participation.
