Pork Industry Hails Farmland Foods Expansion
Even state leaders in one facet of agriculture are hailing the $20 million expansion at Farmland Foods' Monmouth plant.

The Illinois Pork Producers Association was on hand for the expansion announcement Monday. Part of the work including a new harvesting floor and technology upgrades is being done thanks to the use of state grants and economic development tax credits.

Pork Producers President Brent Scholl says Farmland Foods has been a great partner with the pork industry.

"They've helped us out at the Pork patio with getting and donating meat for the state fair. They've helped us at out expo, our annual meeting, and most recently they've helped us out with ground pork products that we've used in our Pork Power Project that we're in our third year with trying to get meat out to our local food pantries throughout Illinois."

Scholl says pork is a $1.7 billion industry in the state, and provides $136 million in taxes.

The news of Farmland's expansion comes months after rival Bob Evans decided to close its pork processing plant in Galva in Henry County, leaving under 100 people out of work.

Farmland's Monmouth plant employs around 15 times that.
