City and Residents Compromise on Rotary Park Plan
Perhaps Galesburg Public Works Director Larry Cox summarized a meeting held at City Hall last night with residents near Rotary Park as it began.

"One of our goals tonight is to come together as a group of neighbors and community first to give our input and decide what's best for the community and what's best for our neighborhood park."

Cox, members of the Rotary and Pilot Clubs, and a number of residents showed up for the meeting, regarding the proposed improvements at the park the clubs want to raise money for, from an ice skating area to a new parking lot and a water spray park.

One of the biggest points of contention for some residents was the parking lot. Resident Debbie Johnston says Rotary Park is a neighborhood park, which doesn't make a parking lot necessary.

"From what I can gather by researching the definition, that it shouldn't need a parking lot, as it's supposed serve as a quarter mile radius and people should be getting there by biking or by foot."

The city is looking at alternatives for the parking lot. Residents agreed other features were going to be good for the park, but came to compromise on some of the proposed locations for those items, including a walking trail.

The Rotary Club wants to raise $250,000 to pay for the improvements, with a matching amount in possible state grants.
