Abingdon Property Owners Could See Break in School Tax Levy
Property owners in the Abingdon School District are getting a little bit of relief in what still is a somewhat tight budget time.

The District 217 School Board last night approved a tentative tax levy for 2011 totaling $16.3 million dollars, which is lower than last year, thanks in part to some more federal money the district is receiving.

Superintendent Tami Roskamp says two funds, Tort and Illinois Municipal Retirement Fund, won't need as much levied this year, which is part of the reason for the decline.

"We're going to use up that reserve in those two funds, also we don't have as much in IMRF to pay out, we're going to be chunking away those two funds, that is a heavy reserve."

If property values increase, Roskamp says the levy would around $5.57 per $100 of assessed value. They would be $5.71 if property values stay the same, and $5.78 if they decrease.

Roskamp says the Knox County Clerk has suggested that a property value decrease, although slight, is likely in the next year.
