St. Louis Post-Dispatch Endorses Quinn
CHICAGO (AP) -- The St. Louis Post-Dispatch has endorsed Democrat Pat Quinn in the race for Illinois governor.

The newspaper chose Quinn over Republican Bill Brady.

But it says neither candidate "offers the kind of strong leadership so desperately needed in Springfield."

The Post-Dispatch notes that Quinn -- who it calls "an accidental governor" -- lacks the political capital needed to stand up to the legislature's Democratic leadership.

But Quinn is praised for having the "courage" to call for tax increases.

Brady is criticized for his proposal for a "mostly across-the-board" cut in all programs that the newspaper says doesn't add up.

The endorsement says Quinn is "a man whose heart is in the right place." But that he needs "some steel in his spine."
