Speaker Madigan Center of Question During Gubernatorial Debate
(IRN)-In a debate Sunday night, the two major party candidates for governor talked about a man who wasn't in the room.

It was Illinois House Speaker Mike Madigan, the state Democratic chairman, who is considered the real power in Springfield .

Democratic Governor Pat Quinn was asked when he has ever stood up to the speaker and succeeded. Quinn said campaign contributions limits. He also mentioned an income tax increase and term limits, both of which the speaker opposed and Quinn has been unable to enact.

State Senator Bill Brady, the Republican nominee for governor noted that the campaign contribution limits apply to individuals, corporations and unions, but not to legislative leaders. Brady said the power of legislative leaders must be reined in, though he agrees with Madigan on the income tax issue.

The 90 minute debate was held at Elmhurst College before a live audience in an auditorium, and was broadcast statewide on public radio. Green Party candidate Rich Whitney, Libertarian Lex Green and independent Scott Lee Cohen were not invited to participate.
