Governor Candidates Talk Thompson Prison
(IRN)-Talk of Thomson Prison is making its way into the race for governor.

Governor Pat Quinn says the state continues to work with the federal government on the sale and transfer of Thomson Prison. He says it's important to find assets that we have that aren't being used and use them in a way to get money for the state. "We're working right now with the federal government to complete the purchase," Quinn said at a recent debate.

But Quinn's Republican opponent, State Senator Bill Brady, disagrees. He says the state should be utilizing Thomson Prison and says it would cost far more to construct a prison in the future should the state need more prison cells.

"The governor is willing to sell an asset of the state for a fraction of what it would cost to replace," Brady said. He added that the deal is a sellout and he would work to stop it if elected.

The federal government initially wanted to buy Thomson to house Guantanamo terrorism detainees. That plan is in flux, but the federal government still wants the facility as a federal prison.
