Galesburg City Council Talks Tax Increases
The city of Galesburg faces a $3 million dollar budget hole next year.

During a budget work session Monday night city staff recommended a three percent property tax hike in order to generate more revenue for the city.

All city council members were adamently against the idea. City Finance Director Gloria Osborn says the increase is necessary.

"On the general fund, which also includes pension and IMRF, we're asking for $4.4 million, and the 2006 and 2009 are circled because those tax levies were even more than what we're asking for this year. So actually we're kind of showing you we don't levy because we can, we levy for what we need for the city."

City treasurer Marv Dahlberg was also quick to point out that accessed evaluation will likely decrease, meaning a property tax increase won't necessary seem like an actual full three percent.
