Gubernatorial Candidates Dodge Financial Questions in Debate
(IRN)-The two major party candidates for governor are having a hard time answering specific questions presented to them by debate panelists. They participated in two broadcast debates this week: One Sunday in Elmhurst, and one Wednesday night in Chicago.

When asked to lay out a specific financial plan for the state budget, State Senator Bill Brady, the Republican candidate, would only talk about his 10 percent across the board cuts. Brady has faced criticism for not have a specific budget plan.

Later it was Democratic Governor Pat Quinn who, when asked twice about how he spends his discretionary budget, which amounts to roughly 13 percent of the state's budget, wouldn't specifically answer the question. Quinn has faced recent criticism for spending discretionary funds to extend a jobs program rather than using that money to pay off state vendors who are owed billions.

Green Party candidate Rich Whitney was not invited to either debate because of his polling numbers. He protested outside during the debate Wednesday night. The debate was hosted by the League of Women Voters of Illinois.
