Conditions Ripe for Fires
Windy weather and a lack of recent rain showers have been good for the farmers, but could potentially be a fire hazard.

Galesburg Fire Chief Tom Simkins tells WGIL people need to be cautious if they are burning leaves outside of town, or even disposing of cigarettes.

Simkins, however, says hopefully any ditch fire would not be able to become out of control at this point in the harvest.

"Fortunately a lot of farmers have got their crops out of the field so any fires we do have out in the rural areas is not maybe so bad because the product is out of there and there's not as much a chance for danger of losing a crop."

The National Weather Service suggests a "heightened fire danger" warning be in effect until Thursday afternoon.

Winds are expected to be up to 25 mile per hour, and Simkins says any burning, where permitted, should occur at around 10 mph.
