State Funding for Railroad Projects
(IRN)-The state is announcing a couple of railroad related grants.

A $5 million stimulus grant to Funk Linko in Chicago Heights so the company can re-tool their equipment to produce low-emission and high speed rail locomotives. The company also will work on producing components for wind turbines. Governor Pat Quinn says re-tooling of the business will create 250 new jobs by 2012.

Full funding for the Moline Transportation Center , which will serve as a station for new Amtrak service between Chicago and the Quad Cities . The station project will create 750 construction jobs. The realization of passenger rail service in downtown Moline will support approximately 1,600 direct and indirect jobs. The total station cost is $16.6 million.

The Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT) was awarded competitive federal funding for the Moline Train Station through the Transportation Investment Generating Economic Recovery (TIGER) Program this week.

The $10 million award was one of only 75 projects funded through the U.S. Department of Transportation, which received nearly 1,000 applications nationwide. Service from Chicago will begin as early as two years from now. This will mark the first passenger train service to the Quad Cities since 1979.
