Quinn, Brady Disagree on Social Matters
(IRN)-The major candidates in the race for governor of Illinois differ on social issues.

The Republican, State Senator Bill Brady, voted in 2004 against a bill banning discrimination in housing, employment and public accommodation on the basis of sexual orientation. Governor Pat Quinn says that means Brady is OK with gay people being fired or tossed out of their homes over their sexual orientation.

But Brady defends the vote, saying, "I don't think we should have special legislation." The protections apply to people of all sexual orientations, not just gays.

That measure did pass, and Illinois bars discrimination based on sexual orientation, along with race and religion. Brady is also against civil unions and gay marriage, whereas Quinn supports civil unions.

Asked why he supports abortion rights but not the death penalty, Quinn says he believes in using the death penalty for the most heinous of cases but believes the moratorium set in place by former Governor George Ryan shouldn't be lifted until there are measures in place to assure an honest man isn't put to death. As for abortion, Quinn didn't give a straight answer. Asked the same question just reversed, why are you against abortion but for the death penalty, Brady says unborn children are innocent and convicted killers are not.
