Orpheum Theatre Not Seeking Historial Designation for Now
One of the things that was stated as lacking both times the Orpheum Theatre unsuccessfully applied for a federal grant officials hoped would pay for a large portion of a number of capital improvements there won't be something the Orpheum Theatre will try to get changed any time soon.

Theatre president Kate Francis told the Knox County Civic Center Authority Board Wednesday she won't be part of an effort trying to seek a national historical designation for either the theatre, or the area around it.

Francis says she came to that determination after a meeting with city leaders, including new interim city manager Craig Whitehead.

"Mr. Whitehead sent me a letter indicating the city would be willing to assist us with pursuing a national designation for the Orpheum Theatre as an individual building, but I don't think that that is a worthy expenditure for us at this time. We've have yet to be able to determine anything of national significance that happened at the building."

Francis says it can cost tens of thousands of dollars for a consultant who works on such designations.

She says she'd rather just try and raise the remainder of a half million dollars she's looking for to upgrade the heating and air conditioning systems, and make other building improvements.
