Public Hearing Set on Disposal of Radium Sludge
SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (AP) -- A public hearing will be held Wednesday on a proposed rule about the land application of sewage sludge and water treatment waste containing radium.

Many communities in northern Illinois use deep bedrock aquifers for drinking water. These waters contain naturally occurring radium. The communities treat the water to remove radium, which can result in elevated levels of radium in sewage sludge.

Sewage sludge is applied to farmland as a substitute for commercial fertilizers in some areas.

The proposed rule would set limits for land application and landfill disposal of these radioactively contaminated sludge and residuals.

The Illinois Emergency Management Agency is holding the hearing at Illinois Valley Community College in Oglesby in Room C316, Wednesday from 9 a.m. to noon and 1-4 p.m.
