Hare Calls for Immigration Reform
A local Congressman up for re-election next week says the country needs immigration reform, but he sympathizes with the plight of the state of Arizona.

Congressman Phil Hare spoke about immigration recently during a press conference at the Illinois Capitol. Arizona adopted strict immigration laws. And Hare says as soon as the election is over, Congress needs to do something, because that way, states won't be left in isolation.

"This situation is not getting any better and I think that both sides, in a bipartisan way, need to sit down and say, 'Look we need a comprehensive immigration policy and we can have one if we're willing to sit down collectively.' And I understand, I don't necessarily agree with what Arizona did but I understand it because they were angry because the federal government hadn't done anything and I myself agree myself, we didn't do anything."

Hare's main opponent, Colona Republican Bobby Schilling, says current immigration laws need to be enforced, and border security needs to be tighter.

Schilling claims Hare has talked about giving illegal immigrants a way toward citizenship, and to him, that sounds a lot like amnesty, something that should never happen.

Hare and Schilling are facing Green Party candidate, Roger Davis of Quincy, who also is calling for current laws to be enforced.
